Description:

ROYAL REYNOLDS, JR. (1910 - 2003) Extraordinary American Brigadier General, commanded the First Battalion of the 57th Infantry Division through the defense of Bataan, later escaped the Bataan Death March and spent the remainder of the war as a guerilla, rejoining American forces upon their return in February 1945. Later, he commanded a regiment in the 17th Infantry Division during the Korean War, commanded the U.S. Army's escape and evasion school, and served as the first President of the Philippine Scout Heritage Society. Enormous grouping of four uniforms, four plaques, and many other personal items, includes: his 'Jacket, Field, M-1943' winter coat, with white cloth name tape and 'US Army' embroidered tape. Each shoulder epaulette has a 'Combat Leaders' slider, each bearing a white general's star insignia. The upper left shoulder bears a nice 2nd Infantry Division patch, and there is a faded spot on the upper right shoulder for a missing shield-shaped patch for past combat service. This patch could have been for the 57th Infantry Regiment 'Philippine Scouts', for WWII combat, or for the 17th Infantry Regiment for his combat service in Korea. Crucially, it is boldly stamped on the interior with a 12 in. long ink stamp, reading: 'Royal Reynolds, Col. O-19238'. WITH: 'Shirt, Man's, Utility, OG107', bearing a set of General's star insignia to the upper lapels, each embroidered of white thread then sewn on. A white name tape 'REYNOLDS' sewn over the right breast pocket. A period black and yellow 'US Army' embroidered tape is sewn on the left breast. Sewn just above the US Army tape is an unusual 'Basic Parachutist Badge', not typically used on this type of shirt. The upper-left shoulder bears a post-1951 Infantry Center & School 'Follow Me' patch. WITH: 1961-dated sateen shirt, with 'Reynolds' name tape and 'US Army' tape, and an unusual 'Basic Parachutist Badge' sewn just above. The left shoulder bears a post-1951 period Infantry Center & School 'Follow Me' patch, with an unfaded area behind in the shape of a unique Second Infantry Division patch. The interior has two faded cloth tags, which list this uniform's nomenclature. One of these tags came off during earlier laundering, but is included. This uniform includes three pairs of Reynolds' utility trousers, some stained, else very good. WITH: his White Mess Dress Uniform, inked 'R-R' for 'Royal Reynolds' on a paper dry cleaners tag once stapled inside. The tag was previously removed from the jacket, yet is included. The lower sleeves each have the mohair cloth rings indicating general officer status, and above them is a single white brigadier general's Star insignia. The lapels are un-faced, and Reynolds likely had affixed some of his miniature medals there at one point, as his miniature Basic Parachutist Badge is still pinned. Sold with his commercial black trousers, often worn with these style uniforms, each bearing one black stripe running the length of the legs. WITH: a WWII to 1955-period pair of Officer's 'Pinks', which are in fact his, but have been re-issued, showing the serial numbers of seven different Officers, none of which match his. WITH: his general's garrison cap, untagged and unnamed inside, bearing General Officer's gold braid, nicely age darkened. The side curtains bears a Officer's style 'Paraglider', with single general's star insignia pinned to the other side. Finishing this grouping, the lot comes with four wooden plaques, presented to him during the early 1960s; four white 'Reynolds' name tapes; his rubberized 'ditty bag', often used to store wet or dirty items; a beautiful neck scarf from the Korean War; dozens of pages of biographical information and portrait photographs, some showing Reynolds wearing similar uniforms to those being sold here. In very good condition overall, with some shrinkage and age fading, typical of uniforms which have seen years of use and frequent washings. From a major private collection on public display.
