Lot 408
408. JACK KEROUAC Extraordinary T.L.S. "Jack Kerouac", 1p. 4to., St. Petersburg, Mar. 31, 1969 to his friend and psychiatrist, Daniel DeSole, who had been supplying Kerouac with amphetamines to presumably help the troubled poet lose weight. In part: "...In the name of American Literature send me a hundred-tablet bottle of Dexedrines. As you know I'm overweight. I'm only 9 feet tall but weigh 200 pounds now (Actually I'm 8 1/2 feet tall). And be sure to include the prescription paper. I'm going to write a book and dedicate it to you. It's going to be called BEAT SPOTLIGHT, dedicated to Dan DeSole...The Pope's medal which I bought for you in Rome WAS heavy and Stella appropriated it...But you said you didn't want a heavy medal altho my bodyguard in Rome...wanted me to meet the Pope, but I told him it wasn't necessary since my great-great-great grand uncle was Pope Pius Sixth, whose sister married Francois-Alexandre LeBris de Kerouac of Brittany, who took coach with her to Rome at the break out of French Revolution and dropped a billion on the Vatican and then took her by ship to Canada..." As was often Kerouac's custom, he adorned his signature by enhancing it by writing over it in a slightly offset manner. Slight marginal wear, folds, else very good. Interestingly, Kerouac's last book was dedicated to DeSole. $2,000-3,000
