407. JACK KEROUAC Revealing, important content A.L.S. "Dexy Jack (not Benny the Dip)", 1p. 4to., Lowell, Oct. 23, 1967 to his friend and psychiatrist, Daniel DeSole, who had been supplying Kerouac with amphetamines to presumably help the troubled poet lose weight. In full: "Dear Danny You Big Bum: - Please send me a bottle of that hootch [Dexedrine] you sent me almost a year ago - In the interests of American Literature - (I'm 15 pounds over my usual 185, also) I have a swell book I can send you. (Autographed! My bibliography!) And your John XXIII medal, bought at Vatican, if you want it. Dexy Jack (Not Benny the Dip)". Folds, very good. Of course, the "Dexy" refers to Dexedrine and "Benny" refers to his old amphetamine of choice, Benzedrine. He would often write while intoxicated with some substance, usually Benzedrine strips he would purge from over-the-counter inhalers, marijuana, and alcohol. He claimed that they --- particularly "Bennies"---enhanced his writing by giving him the tremendous energy that this kind of writing required. Kerouac's last book was dedicated to DeSole.
