JOHN SULLIVAN
(1740 - 1795) American Revolution major general captured at Long Island and exchanged, he later wintered at Valley Forge, and was abandoned by D'Estaing to face the British at Newport. L.S. "Jno Sullivan" 2pp. 4to. with integral address leaf addressed in his hand, Durham, [N.H.], July 25, 1786 to "Major Livermore at Concord", writing, in part : "Upon a presumption that your friendship for me, & regard for the Public weal, will influence you to promote Military knowledge by communicating your experience to your fellow citizens -- I have taken the freedom to appoint you one of my Aids with the rank of lieut. colo. and shall esteem it a favour [sic]...these are to be so dispersed as to prevent those in one extreme of the State riding to another, unless it be their own choice; each one will attend to orders in his own quarter, and pay attention to the discipline of the Troops..." Moderate dampstaining, address leaf trimmed, usual folds, else very good condition.
