STEPHEN SEWALL
(1657 - 1725) American attorney and public official, court clerk during the Salem Witch Trials and brother of Judge Samuel Sewall. During the hysteria, Sewall also took in the mother of Helen Parris, the preacher's daughter whose strange symptoms first brought about charges of witchcraft. Manuscript D.S. "Stephen Sewall J Peace" 1p. oblong 8vo. Salem, Mar. 25, 1724 a notice to "Hannah Pickering Executrix of the Last Will & Testament of Capt. Wm. Pickering late of Salem... " and informing her that"...that at Six of ye clock this afternoon at my Dwelling house in Salem there will be some Evidences taken at ye Motion of John Skinner wherein you may be Concerned and if you See Cause by your selfe [sic] or Attorney may be present... and have them Interrogated as may be proper & Lawfull [sic]..." Captain William Pickering (b. 1670 -c. 1723) commanded the Province Galley that protected the fisheries against the French from 1709 - 1711. Usual folds, else very good.
