Description:

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
(1767-1848) Sixth President of the United States, Secretary of State under Monroe who principally formulated the Monroe Doctrine. Rare A.Ms.S., 1p. 8vo., Washington, "Old May-day, 1836", his poem "The Rose and Thorn", an ode to Shakespeare's character Miranda, the beautiful daughter of the old Duke Prospero. In full: "Miranda's bosom to adorn, As late a child of Spring I chose, Deep in my finger pierc'd a thorn, And sprinkled with my blood the rose. And Oh! may such forever be, Miranda's lot compared with mine; Be all the thorns of life for me, So all the Roses may be thine.". Signed in full at conclusion. A small marginal tear at left, with ink just a bit browned, else very good. Adams fancied himself quite the poet, and his original poems are eagerly sought by collectors.
