JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
(1767 - 1848) Sixth President of the United States, Secretary of State under Monroe who principally formulated the Monroe Doctrine. Fine content and association A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, May 15, 1844, penned in his later years to the acclaimed painter Edward Dalton Marchant, Esq. In part: "...I have received your letter of the 9th Inst. with portraits of President Washington and of my father [John Adams]...which are altogether satisfactory. I have also received your previous letter informing me that the copies were completed...Please forward the originals carefully packed and directed to me, to the care of Hon. Charles Francis Adams...And have the goodness to inform me by the mail what I am indebted to you for the copies...". Edward Dalton Marchant (1806-1887) was a noted portrait artist who painted many important personages of his time, including Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln. With original transmittal cover bearing a fine free frank at top, separated from the back, bearing the original red wax seal. Very good to fine condition.
