Description:

JOHN H. SELMAN
(1839 - 1896) Western lawman and gunman, an acquaintance of Bat Masterson, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Pat Garrett whose varied career with "Selman's Scouts" included cattle rustling, robbery, and outright murder. Selman later became Constable in El Paso, and killed John Wesley Hardin in a dispute over money. Selman himself was killed by a fellow lawman during a similar dispute. Excessively rare A.D.S. "John Selman Foreman" on ornate County of El Paso, District Clerk letterhead, 1p. 4to., El Paso, [Feb. 16, 1891], a verdict in the trial of the State of Texas vs. Incarnacion Baldonado. In full: "We the Jury Empaneled in the above styled Cause find the defendant guilty as charged and assess his punishment at one day in the County Jail". Fine condition, and worthy of presentation. Following Selman's life as an outlaw, organizing and leading a band of desperados called Selman's Scouts, he fled to Mexico until 1888 when all charges against him were dropped. He then moved to El Paso to "reform" his evil ways.
