Description:

Fine set of sixty b/w photos, most approx. 4" x 6" and smaller, affixed to ten disbound album pages compiled by a warrant officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The majority depict this officer in his naval uniform at various stages of his career, along with family photos showing other individuals in Army and Navy uniforms and civilian relatives. Most interestingly, however, eight appear to show the aftermath of the "Shanghai incident" of 1932, in which Japanese forces retaliated against several anti-Japanese attacks by Chinese citizens, including the beating of nationalist Japanese monks. Three of the photos present here show a capsized military vessel, most likely Chinese, with two additional views showing Japanese sailors posing with captured coastal defense guns. Additional images show a group of Japanese soldiers posed on a staff car, with another posed shot showing a Japanese flag bearer and other troops storming a barricade, as a machine gunner provides cover. While many of the portraits and family photos presented here are accompanied by captions in Japanese characters, none of the photos of the incident itself are so labeled. The photos show some fading and soiling, with some damage visible to certain family photos, else very good. Worthy of further research.
