Description:

An excellent photo album assembled by an Imperial Japanese Army heavy machine gunner, 36pp. 4to., containing 85 b/w photos, most 4 1/2" x 3" or smaller, depicting his service in China or Manchuria during the Second Sino-Japanese War. While the album contains several of the expected group shots and individual views of this soldier and his comrades during their training in Japan, it is exceptional in that the majority appear to have been taken in the field and in action. These include several views of soldiers servicing and transporting their Type 3 machine guns, with the harsh landscapes of the northern Chinese and Manchurian steppes as a backdrop. Additional views show soldiers in full combat gear with camouflaged helmets, posing with their machine gun while in gas masks, digging trenches, traveling through the Chinese countryside by train, cooking in mess cans, and more. The most exciting views show machine gun crews firing from trenches and in ranks on open plains, with a close-up of spent ammunition strips, and later several views of the machine gunners supporting a tank advance. Home front views include soldiers recuperating in a military hospital, artistic views of cherry blossoms, and a kendo match. Some photos are accompanied by ink captions in Japanese characters, unfortunately untranslated by us. Shows minor toning to the page edges, with some minor silvering or fading to a few photos, else very good, not at all detracting from the dramatic images.
