Description:

JACK RUBY DIET PILLS PRESCRIPTION
JACK RUBY (1911-1967) Dallas nightclub owner who shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald following Oswald's assassination attempt of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Partly printed D.S., 1p., 12mo., Dallas, May, 15, 1956, a prescription from Dr. Perry E. Gross to Jack Ruby. The prescription, unfilled, was found in Ruby's 1956 pocket address book, and was for 50 pills of AMBAR, a diet drug made by pharmaceutical firm Robins and Strasenburgh. Ambar, then a popular drug, fell into disuse because it consisted of methamphetamine ("speed") and phenobarbital; Ruby told his prison psychiatrists in 1963 that he had taken Ambar repeatedly in the past. The Dallas Police Criminal Intelligence Report shows an interview with Dr. Gross taken on January 15, 1964, in which Gross stated: "...Ruby is aggressive, impulsive, and impatient...". The interview also indicates Ruby's visits and treatments. Gross stated he saw Ruby on May 15, 1956 for "abrasions, head, eye, face" due to "fight in club". It remains unclear why Gross prescribed Ruby methamphetamine-based diet pills on that visit. Minor folds, else fine.
