Description:

HARRY S. TRUMAN
Superb content T.L.S. as Vice President on official letterhead, "Harry S Truman", 1p., 4to., Washington, Feb. 6, 1945, a letter to his friend, Lt. Col. John W. Carrothers. In part: "...Thanks a lot for your nice letter of January Twentieth. You are just right, I never had any ambition to be Vice President, but here I am and I have to do the best I can...". Truman wishes his friend well in his new overseas assignment, and proves incredibly wrong about his own future: "...Wish I could pay you a visit, but it looks now as if I won't get out of the United States for the next four years...". Truman would soon travel to Potsdam and begin preparations for the atomic bombing of Japan. Finally, he makes a rare personal mention of his World War I experience: "I am sure the first want of every soldier is to get home and when he gets home he wants to find it like he left it... That is the way I felt when I came home from France...". Lightly toned with file holes at top, else very good. Along with an S.P. 3" x 5" b/w, a post-presidential head and shoulders pose, lightly signed "Harry Truman, 8-23-67". Very good condition, two pieces.
