Description:

HARRY S. TRUMAN
Superb content T.L.S. as Senator on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, July 3, 1937, to Kansas City crony and fellow Pendergast man William Kirby. In part: "...Please let me know the result of your interview with Jim Pendergast, and whether or not he called the Governor. The Governor specifically told me that he would appoint you if I got you the Kansas City endorsement. I can't understand that he would about-face if this endorsement went in as I was told it would...If you could get on there, and get Kammerer for the Executive Officer, we would still be in a good position...". Boldly signed, "Harry". James Pendergast, son of Michael Pendergast, continued to run the Kansas City political machine with the help of Truman and others. William Kirby, a longtime Truman ally, would go on to become manager of the Missouri State Employment Service in Kansas City. Lightly toned, else fine.
