166. GETTYSBURG ASSISTANT PROVOST MARSHAL A great war-date signed CDV of Gettysburg Quartermaster Captain Henry B. Blood, showing him standing before the camera. Capt. Blood lightly signed on the lower margin of the mount "Yours Truly, H. B. Blood, Capt...", and dated the verso Washington, Nov. 26, 1862. Immediately following the battle, Blood was dispatched to Gettysburg to help Provost Marshall Smith clear the bloody battlefield of Gettysburg of the dead and debris. For several weeks following the battle, Blood helped to bury the fallen heroes while also saving the government many thousands of dollars by collecting booty from the battlefield. On numerous occasions, Blood angered local citizens by searching their farms and private residences finding, in many instances, items retrieved from the littered battlefield after the army had declared the area off limits. No backstamp. Minor soiling, else very good. $200 - 300
