167. ENUMERATING THE DEAD AT CAMP LETTERMAN A good war-date Camp Letterman related Gettysburg letter, 3p. 4to., in ink by Capt. Wilson Tweed Hartz on Office of Commissary General of Prisoners letterhead, Washington, D. C., Nov. 2, 1863 to Surg. Henry Janes in charge of the hospitals at Gettysburg, Penn.. The letter concerns the reporting of the number of men who died or were released from Camp Letterman, Gettysburg, in part: "...I have the honor to call your attention to the following facts...in your return for August you show present for duty...147 non-com. Officers and privates, wounded 18 F & S. [Field & Staff] officers, 58 company officers, 832 non com. officers and privates, total 1055. 8 company officers and 108...privates have died, and you have transferred...leaving a balance on hand Aug. 31st...763 together with 7 surgeons and 3 chaplains not embodied in the returns...you refer to 1 staff officer, 3 company officers...as being turned over to the Prov. Marshal July 31st...no other rolls have been received at this office...you are therefore requested to furnish this office with a correct return...".
