165. GETTYSBURG NURSE OBITUARY A rare printed war-date nurse's obituary, 1p. 8vo., Philadelphia, ca. May 27, 1864. In bold black letters the obituary declares: "...DIED in Christ, on Friday the 27th of May, 1864, from disease of the heart, contracted by her voluntary efforts on behalf of the sick and wounded soldiers on the battle-fields of the Army of the Potomac, MARY A. BRADY...aged 42...acquaintances, and soldiers are respectfully invited to attend the funeral...Wednesday morning, the 1st of June. To proceed to Mount Moriah Cemetery...". Mary A. Brady came from Ireland to Philadelphia in the mid 1840s. During the Civil War, she was drawn to the suffering of the Union soldiers in her city and began attending to the sick and wounded after the Seven Days' Campaign. Mrs. Brady attended to these duties until the battle of Gettysburg, where she attended to the men of the 3rd Corps hospital near the site of White House chapel. Writing of her experience she noted that her tent sat near "...a long row of tents, occupied exclusively by amputated cases...". In 1864, her death was mourned by thousands of soldiers whom she helped nurse back to health. Usual folds, else very good. $250 - 350
