Description:

(GEORGE. MCCLELLAN) GUSTVUS V. FOX
(1821-1883) Lincoln's assistant Secretary of Navy who worked closely with Gideon Welles and helped negotiate Seward's purchase of Alaska. Very fine content A.D.S., 1p. oblong 4to., [Washington], Mar. 31, 1863 being a "True ex[tract}" of a communication from McClellan to Fox "...dated Fairfax Court House M[ar]ch 14th [1862]..." Following the success of the U.S.S. Monitor on March 9, 1862, McClellan wrote, five days after the fact: "Now all accounts rec'd I have such a living faith in the gallant little Monitor that I feel that we can trust her, so I have determined on the Fort Monroe Movement.'" On Mar 12, 1862, McClellan had held a conference at Fairfax Court House and pressed his plan to advance along the peninsula, a plan that would commit a large body of federal troops on a slow-moving and ultimately unsuccessful campaign against Richmond. This document was likely prepared as part of a War Department report on McClellan's service following his dismissal from command in November 1862. Very fine condition.
