Description:

JOHN C. FREMONT
1813 - 1890) "The Pathfinder", explorer of the western frontier and Union army major general until sacked by Lincoln for his efforts to garner more power. Very fine content A.L.S. "J. C. Fremont Maj Genl. U.S.A." 1p. legal folio, Washington, Jan 16, 1862 being a statement issued to the Wade Committee on the Conduct of the War which had been investigating a variety of matters including Lincoln's order countermanding Fremont's proclamation of emancipation in Missouri in 1861. Submitting the proofed transcripts of his testimony [not present] given before the committee, Fremont writes in full: "...it is not grateful to me to have been myself compelled to set out the merits of my administration, but it was necessary in order to bring attention to points which otherwise might not have been presented & which are necessary to a clear understanding of the subjects enquired into. Many acts which have been censured were I think for the public good -- I know they were with that intention. I do not feel in any case I overstepped the authority intended to be confided to me. Myself & the officers & men acting with me were actuated solely by a desire to serve the county & I feel assured that this is realized by the people of the West among whom we were acting. All of which, together with the proofs, is respectfully submitted. " Following the battle of Wilson's Creek in August 1861, Fremont imposed martial law in the state of Missouri, confiscating secessionist's property and emancipating their slaves. Lincoln, fearing the order would tip Missouri in favor of the Confederacy, countermanded Fremont's order and relieved him of duty, much to the consternation of Radical Republicans in Congress. Fremont would challenge Lincoln for the Presidency in 1864, nominated by a Republican splinter group. Usual folds, else fine condition.
