Description:

HENRY WARD BEECHER
(1813 - 1887) American clergyman who was an ardent supporter of abolition and woman suffrage. He was brought down by an adultery scandal that shocked the nation. Fine content A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Brooklyn, Apr. 6, 1864 to Benjamin F. Wade concerning a statement, attributed to him, that Gen. Joseph Hooker was drunk at Chancellorsville. Beecher is obviously upset that his confidence had been broken by another: "I did not make any 'public remarks about Genl. Hooker, While in England. At a Breakfast, of Temperance men, strictly Confidential, and pledged to make no report of proceedings. I alluded to Hooker's condition. My remarks were published in violation of Confidence. as to my evidence, it was fuel as to produce moral conviction, but not to establish the fact, legally, that, during the last part of the battle of Chancellorsville, Hooker was under the influence of liquor. I do not feel at liberty to mention my informant until I can see him & get his permission." Benjamin Wade, a Radical Republican senator openly hostile to the Lincoln administration, formed this joint committee in December 1861 to investigate various failings of the Union war effort including Lincoln's firing of Fremont, the loss at First Bull Run and the conduct of George McClellan. Usual folds, one contemporary ink smudge, else very fine condition.
