GEORGE B. RODNEY
(1719-1792) Legendary British admiral who forced the surrender of Martinique and Havana during the Seven Years War. During the Revolutionary War he defeated French Admiral de Grasse at Les Saintes in 1782. Partly-printed D.S. "G. Rodney" as rear admiral, 1p. legal folio, St. Ann Bay, Martinique, Jan. 8, 1762 appointing William Marxhall as surgeon's mate aboard the HMS Devonshire. Signed one day following Rodney's arrival off French-held Martinique. The island surrendered after a month-long siege on Feb. 16, 1762. Margins chipped, partial fold separations and toning, else very good. Matted and framed with an 18th century print depicting the surrender of the Compte de Grasse to Rodney in 1782.
