Description:

CAESAR RODNEY
(1728 - 1784) American Revolutionary patriot and Signer of the Declaration of Independence, a major general of the Delaware militia and later President of Delaware. Scarce A.L.S. "Caesar Rodney" 1p. legal folio, Dover, June 7, 1773 with integral address leaf (chipped) addressed to his younger brother, Thomas Rodney. The younger Rodney was a Continental Congressman from Delaware, a member of the Democratic-Republican Party who served in the Delaware General Assembly, and as a Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court. Rodney first discusses family business surrounding a home and the lease of horses, then moves on to his brother's impending marriage: "...you gave me some intimation concerning an intention of marriage w[ith] Sally or rather an application to her on that head...I...should be glad that you, if you can gain information would be more explicit in that matter - or otherwise that she would - if the bearer of this letter was not waiting I should say more to this purpose...don't neglect to write me at the first opportunity...". Old tape repair on verso affects several words at right margin, some marginal wear, else very good.
