Description:

ROBERT ROSS
(1766 -1814) British army officer who participated in the Napoleonic War and the War of 1812. He led the army which burned the American capital during the War of 1812 and is thus credited as the first commander to defeat a full United States army in the field. Received a change of family name to Ross-of-Bladensburg after decisively winning the Battle of Bladensburg in Maryland on August 24, 1814. A.L.S. 2pp., 4to., Canterbury, May 11 [n.y. but ca. 1803], a report of arrival of troops to his superiors. In part: "...I have the honor to report to you that a party of the Kildian militia, consisting of two Sergeants and fifteen [illeg.] have arrived this day from Ireland, and that [illeg.] may be lost in their joining their Regiment before its Induction in Portsmouth...". Boldly signed, "R Ross" as Lieutenant Colonel. Ross's rank makes the likely date around 1803, and therefore while in command of the 20th Regiment fighting against Napoleon in Egypt and Europe. Light toning with minor foxing and moderate soiling on verso not affecting signature, else very good.
