195. GEN. HERMAN HAUPT AMIDST THE DESTRUCTION AT FREDERICKSBURG Exceptional Civil War post-battle photograph, 13 1/4" x 10" sepia, showing Union Gen. Herman Haupt (at left) and his assistant William Wright surveying wrecked caissons and dead horses left behind by the Washington Artillery of New Orleans on the battlefield at Fredericksburg. Haupt and Wright toured the area on May 4, 1863 and incredibly Jubal Early recaptured this same location, Marye's Heights, the very same day, with Haupt narrowly avoiding capture. The photo comes from the archive of Capt. Andrew J. Russell of 141st NY who was detached from his regiment to record the progress of the construction of military railroads by Gen. Herman Haupt. During the Chancellorsville campaign Russell was placed near Sedgewick's 6th Army Corps, and followed Haupt and Sedgewick's paths following the battle. Negligible brown stain at center bottom, else very good. $700 - 900
