Description:

FRANKLIN PIERCE
Fine content, unusual A.D.S. as President, 1p. 4to., "Executive Mansion", Aug. 10, 1854, an appointment for a gentleman to sign land grants on his behalf with Pierce's name! Pierce pens on a plain lined sheet, in full: "Col. Henry E. Baldwin, Present. You are hereby appointed assistant Secretary to sign my name to land patents under the provisions of the Act approved 4th January, 1848, vice J. H. Wheeler, resigned, with authority to sign all such patents as may have been left unsigned by the late assistant Secretary. Franklin Pierce Executive Mansion August 10th, 1854". Along with the formal appointment, a partly-printed D.S. 1p. 4to., from the General Land Office, directed to Henry E. Baldwin, in part: "...By director of the Secretary of the Interior you are appointed a clerk in this office at a salary of Fifteen hundred dollars per annum...". Signed by John Wilson as Commissioner of the Land Office. Not much information remains about New Hampshire-born Baldwin (d. 1857), save that he was in fact Assistant Secretary to the President to sign said land patents. Pierce's document bears folds and a few stains and one mounting strip on verso; appointment bears similar folds and mounting strip. Overall very good, two pieces.
