JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Scarce partly-printed D.S. "James Buchanan" as President, 1p. oblong folio, Washington, Oct. 19, 1859, a four-language ship's paper for a Pacific whaling voyage. The paper was issued to William R. Potter of the Ship Illinois out of New Bedford "...bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions Stores and Utensils for a whaling Voyage...". Countersigned by LEWIS CASS as Secretary of State. With intact paper seal of the United States. Usual folds, one of which affects Buchanan's signature, a few toned spots, minor marginal wear, else fine condition.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made. Customer's who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
