Description:

FRANKLIN PIERCE
Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, July 24, 1856, an appointment of James L. Henderson to "...Commander in the Navy, from the 14th of September 1855...". Co-signed by JAMES C. DOBBINas Secretary of the Navy. While not much is known of him, James L. Henderson (d. 1876) was from Pennsylvania. He became a midshipman in 1828, Lieutenant in 1840, and, in our document, a Commander in the Confederate States Navy. He apparently commanded the batteries at Gloucester Point around 1862. Usual folds with three small holes thereon at middle, a bit of staining to edges, overall very good condition.
