FRANKLIN PIERCE
(1804 - 1869) Fourteenth President of the United States who initiated the Gadsden Purchase, opening up the Northwest for settlement. Fine partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, July 24, 1856, a military appointment of Joseph M. Bradford as "...a Lieutenant in the Navy, from the 14th of September 1855...". During the Civil War, Bradford was Commander of the sloop Oneida and the gunboat New London as part of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron in 1863-4, and Lieutenant Commander in the South Atlantic Blocking Squadron in 1865. Boldly signed at bottom right, and countersigned by JAMES DOBBIN as Secretary of the Navy. Very slight stained area and one tiny hole at center, otherwise in unusually good condition.
