Description:

FRANKLIN PIERCE
(1804 - 1869) Fourteenth President of the United States who initiated the Gadsden Purchase, opening up the Northwest for settlement. Superb partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. legal folio, Washington, April 24, 1856. Pierce authorizes the Secretary of State to affix the official seal of the United States to "...a treaty with the Chipewyan Indians of Sault Ste. Marie...". The Chipewyan were a Northern Algonquin nomadic tribe whose territory stretched from the Churchill River north to the tundra and from Hudson Bay in the east to Great Slave Lake and the region surrounding Sault Ste. Marie. Living virtually unchallenged in this remote area, the Chipewyan remained on friendly terms with the U.S. Government. This is a notable example of treaties that began in 1837, in which the Chipewyan gradually ceded their lands to the United States. Eventually the tribe was restricted to small reservations in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. Two light strips of offsetting, one very slightly affecting Pierce's signature, else very good condition. Matted and ready to frame.
