ENTRENCHING TOOLS FOR SARATOGA HUGH HUGHES, Deputy Quartermaster for New York State. Good content war date A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, Fishkill, July 10, 1777 to Major Nicholas Quakenbush, Assistant Deputy Quartermaster at the Continental Village enclosing "...an Invoice of entrenching Tools for General Schuyler sent from Headqr's.— If they are not gone off, let them be send on Sight, by Water, in some light Craft...". Major General Philip Schuyler was in charge of defending Albany from a planned British attack from the north. These tools would have come in very useful for the northern army as they constructed fortifications near Freeman's farm to counter Burgoyne's advance. Usual folds, otherwise very good. $300-400
