DEFENDING THE HUDSON VALLEY, 1777 Fine content A.L.S. of Deputy Quartermaster HUGH HUGHES, 4pp. 4to., Fishkill, May 22, 1777 to Major Nicholas Quackenbush discussing the intricate logistics of supply. He writes in part: "...I am very glad you are so well stock'd with Cash, but don't be unnecessarily lavish of it, as perhaps the Enemy may throw themselves between Hqrs. and us for some Time. I want to see you greatly, but am waiting General Washington's Orders, which youplease to acquaint the General [Schuyler?] with. I am to group, this side, as high as Espous [Kingston], cross & meet General Clinton the other side, in order to fix on Places for the Commissary's Stores &c...If General Putnam is arriv'd, please to off[er] my respectful Regards to him, and let him know the Business I am on, and that I will wait on him, as soon as it [is] completed. Are there any Cartridge boxes arriv'd from Danbury. If not, let them be sent for, as there are several done, which I ordered down, when there...Tell Steel to make Patterns for every Kind of Carriage, as the Forge of Dean will be in Blast in a few Day[s] and we can have what we want...Mr. Steel must set a Hand immediately to making Pennsylvania Cart Saddles; that is, for single hors'd Carts or Waggons [sic]...".
