Description:

HELP FOR FORT MONTGOMERY Good content war date L.S. "Thomas Betts ADM Genl"1p. legal folio, Fort Montgomery, July 6, 1777 to Nicholas Quakenbush, Assistant Deputy Quartermaster at Albany (but at this time in nearby "Continental Village", requesting supplies: "The Militia being Call'd in I am under Necessity of Writing to you for Potts and Cettles [sic] as there is Nothing for them to Cook in; I have sent Down a boat to have to send them immediately...". The militia has been called in to reinforce the strategic fort on the Hudson as Washington was still at work guessing where Howe would move during the campaign of 1777. With Burgoyne marching southward from Canada, he surmised that Howe would move north to meet the former at Albany. By this day, he had concluded Howe would move eastward instead of North. In the end Howe sailed his troops from New York to Philadelphia, leaving Burgoyne in the lurch. Usual folds, uneven margins, otherwise very good. $300-400
