Description:

(1833 - 1863) Confederate brigadier general who fought at First Bull Run and later served in Wheeler's 19th Alabama. Tracy served in Eastern Tennessee prior to participating in the Vicksburg campaign, where he was mortally wounded at Port Gibson. War-date A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Lynchburg, Virginia, May 8, 1861, to his wife. In part: ‘...If I am assured that you and the babies and Sue and mother are well, I care nothing for Lucifer and his hosts. I received a letter from my dear friend...yesterday, which made my heart glad...I believe the exposure which you dreaded so much on my account is positively beneficial...Sleeping under tents is not the hard thing that I had imagined, and were it not for the depletion of your and Susie's and Georgia's morning kisses I would get along quite tolerably. Do write to me...honey, and tell me how you all are...if you languish I will die. I see but little of Lawson he is even busier than I am...I have procured for John the position of private secretary to Col. Jones. Which relieves him from the drudgery of a private's life. Pay no attention to the thousands of canards in relation to war matters which circulate in Huntsville...God bless and keep you...' He signs: ‘Your affectionate husband E. D. Tracy'. Tears and holes along the mailing folds, unevenly toned. This letter presents a more tender side to not only Tracy but all soldiers who have left loved ones at home.
