Description:

WILLIAM E. 'GRUMBLE' JONES AND JOHN G. WALKER
WILLIAM E. 'GRUMBLE' JONES (1824 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who fought with Stuart at Gettysburg, with Longstreet In Tennessee; killed at Piedmont. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Fort Clark, Texas, July 16, 1856 to Capt. JOHN G. WALKER (1822-1893), later a Confederate major general who led a division at Harpers Ferry and Antietam, also serving in the Trans Mississippi and in New Mexico. Jones complains that beef cattle sent to him are far in excess of his needs, and much of the meat would have to be discarded. On the verso, Walker responds with a lengthy A.E.S., in full: 'Approved & respectfully forwarded. In addition I would remark in consequence of the rocky nature of much of the road over which we will travel & the great scarcity of water I feel certain that the cattle alluded to will soon become so much exhausted as to make it necessary to abandon them or they will greatly impede the movement of my command Respectfully J. G. Walker Capt. RMR'. Also bears above an A.E.S. at top again signed by Jones. Very good
