Description:

JOHN MILTON
(1807 - 1865) Governor of Florida through most of the American Civil War. In that post, he turned the state into a major supplier of food for the Confederacy. In his final message to the state legislature as the war was ending, he had declared that death would be preferable to reunion with the North, and was found dead of gunshot soon after. Fine content and association war-date A.L.S. on official letterhead, 1p. large 8vo., Tallahassee, Feb. 28, 1862 to C.S.A. Gen. ROBERT E. LEE in Savannah. In part: '...Permit me to introduce to your acquaintance Genl. F. S. Dancey of East Florida. He is a gentleman of military education and experience...and acquainted with...resources of the State, as well as the general character of the population. The requisition for two regiments and a battalion will be responded to - and would be for the War, if for special service - none but volunteers for the War, would be received...four companies of cavalry will be ready at any moment, to take the place of the regiment commanded by Col. Davis. It is thought best not to place the companies under order until Davis' regiment is ready to take up the line of march...' Mounting remnants on verso, else fine. Gen. Francis L. Dancy served as a colonel in the Confederate army and was in charge of the Commissary Department of Florida. It was likely this meeting with Lee that paved the way for the coordination of supply between Florida and the armies under Lee's control. William George M. Davis (1812–1898) would later become a Confederate brigadier general. When the war started, Davis donated $50,000 to the Confederate States and raised the 1st Florida Cavalry Regiment. He was given command of the Confederate provisional forces in eastern Florida and later served in Tennessee. Rare!
