239. EARLY UTAH A good content political letter, an A.L.S. of "Z. Snow" a federal judge in the Utah Territory, 3pp. 4to., Great Salt Lake City, May 29, 1854 to L. W. Cochran, in part: "...My primary prospects are not very good though I am yet able to lie as well as my neighbors. I have a small stock of cattle of about thirty head and a small farm with such little as I am now able to obtain. I am cultivating some thirty acres of grain this season as for the law you know I am yet associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States within and for the territory of Utah but my term of office expires Sept. 28. 1854 and I am told the President has made several unsuccessful efforts at appoint my successor and send him on but as yet has failed. Notwithstanding this I have made application for a re appointment of the success of which I have not been informed. If I am reappointed I shall be well enough off for the present if not I can not tell you what my condition as it takes a mint to support a man here. I intrusted my application to the Hon. John M. Bernhisel Delegate from Utah but as he is a member of the no [nothing] party which is a species of whigery you know...I have therefore respectfully to request you to write to Mr. Pugh stating how long you have know me...and that I have always been with the Democrats...".
