Description:

D. F. "GHOST DANCERS"
A striking 9" x 7" original photograph, titled in photographer D. F. Barry's own hand, depicting a line of nine Sioux in full regalia. One of Barry's most reproduced photographs, this image of young men at the Standing Rock Indian Agency has been titled and re-titled in numerous books, the captions reflective of the various author's and publisher's biases. Barry titled this photograph "Ghost Dancers" in his own hand, even though the photograph has been dated to 1879 and the so-called Ghost Dance did not reach Standing Rock until October 1890. Barry knew how to market his work and that the public wouldn't know Ghost Dancers from any other dancers, all they would see was a line of Lakota men and boys in what appeared to be dance regalia. Although Barry left Standing Rock and Bismarck for Superior, Wisconsin in May 1890, there is a possibility - albeit slight - that Barry photographed some Ghost Dancers at Standing Rock as, in December 1890, the Superior newspaper The Leader, reported that he had returned from a two-week trip to Standing Rock that began in the latter part of November. Bearing Barry's copyright blind stamp in the center, below the dancers. Very clean and sharp. Matted to 14" x 11".
