CHIEF JOSEPH
(1840 - 1904) The chief of the Wal-lam-wat-kain (Wallowa) band of Nez Perce Indians during General Oliver O. Howard's attempt to forcibly remove his band and the other "non-treaty" Indians to a reservation in Idaho. For his principled resistance to the removal, he became renowned As a humanitarian and peacemaker. Superb 7" x 10" black and white photograph of Chief Joseph taken just weeks after his surrender, with D. F. Barry's copyright blind stamp to the right, center. The image is attributed to both O.S. Goff and F.J Haynes. Barry subsequently produced and copyrighted the image after he assumed control of Goff's Bismarck studios in 1884. Some soiling to the background, mostly light, and two scratches that do not detract from the photograph. Matted to 15" x 18".
