CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S LETTER
Good content A.L.S. of J. A. Washington, 4pp. sm. 4to., "Camp Potomac", Mar. 5, 1862, to his wife, in part: "...I arrived safely his evening...We did not get to Richmond until nearly noon...I have met several of my brother officers on the way...as martial law is prevailing in Richmond you can imagine that we were all sober enough...On the way here I heard the most wonderful and conflicting reports as to our movements & probably destination. At Fredksbg. I had the pleasure of seeing some of our battery cannon on their way down the Rappahannock. This battery is entirely deprived of guns, and one of our companies goes tomorrow to man the new battery to be erected near Fredsbg. There is very great excitement in this locality...There is no longer any doubt that Manassas is evacuated, our lines drawn in, & those forces sent to this neighborhood. Every gun is removed from Evansport, where I do not know. The enemy are getting very imprudent. Capt. Walker told me that they had been running in & firing at our batteries, & that he had a brush with their gunboats this morning. When all this excitement will end I am unable to foresee...I find that our regiment is put again at hard drill - every officer is required to be present at all roll calls & therefore must be up at daylight every morning...Our regiment was paid off yesterday & consequently there is some considerable disturbance & drinking among the men. The guard house is now full...There is considerable sickness in this regt., although none of it is serious...". Boldly penned, light wear, overall very good condition.
