Description:

FIGHTING THE YANKEES IN NORTH CAROLINA
War date A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton of the 26th North Carolina, 4pp. 12mo., Goldsboro, N.C., Dec, 19, 1862 in pencil to his father: "...we left Petersburg last Monday for Kinston, N.C., but the enemy had taken it before we got there and we were stopped at Mosley Hall and after we burned about 150 bales of cotton we turned back to Goldsboro. The Yankees came up on the west side of the Nuse River in heavy force and succeeded in reaching the bridge at Goldsboro and burned it, cut the telegraph wire and tore up about 5 miles of the railroad, the Wilmington railroad. Our forces met them here and after a sharp fight our forces drove them back with heavy losses on both sides. Our pickets report that the enemy is throwing up breastworks about 10 miles from here but I doubt whether it is so or not. They destroyed all the bridges on the river as they came up to prevent our men from crossing from the north side and getting in their rear. We had no forces in this vicinity at the time the Yankees made their dash but the troops have been pouring into this place till now. There are several thousand here and around about here. The Raleigh Guard got into the fight at Kingston and was completely scattered. There was 150 of them taken prisoners... We are ready for moving at any moment but I have no idea where or which way we may go. It depends upon what direction the Yankees go. I must close. May God assist us and shield our defenseless farms from every danger and bless us for the redeemers sake... " Extremely light toning at usual folds, else very good.
