CONFEDERATE HONOR ROLL OF FALLEN HEROES
JAMES A. SEDDON (1815 - 1880) Confederate Secretary of War from 1862 until nearly the war's end when he sacked Johnston at Atlanta. Fine content manuscript L.S. as Secretary of War, 1p. 8vo., Apr. 21, 1864, on brown on Confederate States of America letterhead to M. L. Bonham, Governor of South Carolina, sending him a copy of "Special Order No. 91". In part: "...I have the honor to invite your attention to the enclosed copy of an Extract from Special Orders No. 91 issued from the Aift. and Insp. Genl's Office, in reference to Wm. B. Johnston, appointed by the General Assembly of S. C. as Agent for the collection and records of the names of the gallant sons of S. C. who have fallen in their country's defense...". Along with the extract mentioned, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Apr. 19, 1864, on official letterhead, in part: "...Wm. B. Johnston, having been appointed by the General Assembly of South Carolina as Agent for the collection of and record for deposit of the State Archives, of the names of the gallant sons of South Carolina, who have, from whatever cause, fallen in their country's defense. Commanding officers of Armies in which South Carolina Troops may be serving, are requested to afford him such facilities in the discharge of his duties as may not conflict with the interests of the service...". Signed by JOHN M. RIEBY as Assistant Adjutant General. Both pieces very good, and a nice pair of documents.
