1862 DIARY OF PRIVATE O.H. SCUDDER, 89TH ILLINOIS MENTIONING MORGAN'S RAID
Civil War diary of Pvt. O.H. Scudder of Oneida, Ill., who enlisted with the 89th Illinois in August 1862. The leather-bound diary, kept in pencil, measures 4"x6" and covers his service during the balance of 1862. The diary reads, in small part "[Sept. 7] ...Camp Manchester, Louisville. Church forenoon. Gurilla [sic] Morgan burnt a bridge on the Louisville and Nashville road toady... [Sept. 8]...Camp Manchester. The 76th Indiana captured the gurilla Morgan's band to day, 800 men...[Sept. 11]... Morning went across the river to Jeffersonville and sit [sic] in some cool cars until 3 PM...Stood guard over a drunken man in Co. D... [Sept. 21]...Our company out on pickett [sic], the Rebels within three miles of us...[Sept. 25]...In camp all day drinking whiskey and quinine for the diarrhea... [Oct. 12]...In hospital...Jim McCall left for the barracks to night. There was about 200 secesh prisoners of Kirby Smith's forces were brot [sic] into town to day prisoners... [Nov. 9]... went to a nigger church in the evening... [Nov. 12]...My birthday, 24 years old. Went to a nigger wedding at the church...". The memoranda section in the back of the diary records recipes including a treatment "for dropsy Jamaica Rum 1 quart, Wormwood 1/2 pound. Take one table spoonful twice a day... Hemor[rh]age of the lungs. 1 charge of gun powder. Sweetneed [sic] with sugar and water. Take internally... ". The diary is accompanied by two railroad passes from 1865 together with a printed meal ticket issued to Scudder. Scudder served with the 89th Illinois until May 1865. The regiment saw action at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Columbia and Nashville. Usual wear to cover and pages, but overall mostly clean and in very good condition.
