419. CIVIL WAR RELIC COLLECTION A great collection of seven relics from the Civil War, all collected by Pvt. Adolph R. Candy of Mattoon, Indiana. Candy served with the 38th Indiana Infantry and collected these relics during and just after the war. Each of the items bears Candy's period identifying label. They include: two approx 3" x 1/4" sections of wood with tag reading "I cut these splinters from the door of the cell in which Jefferson Davis was confined in Fortress Monroe A.R. Candy"; a 4" x 3" section of granite labeled "A piece of Fortress Monroe", also signed (label torn); a semi-spherical section of "Rebel Sh[ell]"; a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" section of "Brick from Libby Prison" in glass case; a very thick, fragmented section of shell, possibly a mortar (label illegible); about a tablespoon of coarse black powder in a glass case labeled: "Artillery Powder from Blockade Runner 1864"; and a lump of "Lignite (Coal) from Northern Pacific Rail road 100 miles west of Bismark", also in a glass case.
