Description:

BROOKLYN HISTORY AND JUDAICA
An outstanding large archive of photographs, mimeographed newsletters, programs, pamphlets and correspondence, all pertaining to the "East Flatbush Carlisle Club", Inc., from its founding in 1932 to its subsequent incorporation in 1940. Also included in this lot is a series of World War 11 issues of The Carlisle Indian newsletter, each 4pp., many with original snapshots of Brooklyn servicemen, both state-side as well as fighting in the various theaters during the war. We estimate that fewer than 100 copies of these newsletters with original snap-shots were printed! The East Flatbush Carlisle Club was created as a vehicle to promote social and athletic activities, with an emphasis on educational development and cultural awareness, and with the stipulation that the "core" membership reside from the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. In essence, this archive traces the history of a group of Brooklyn Jewish boys who banded together to win the 1932 and 1933 Police Athletic League Borough championships in baseball, as well as fielding competitive basketball squads. As time went by and the membership grew older, we find several members graduating from high school and entering college, while others entered the various branches of the United States military. In 1939-1940, the club maintained a radical political view on the war in Europe, organizing peace rallies to prevent American involvement. In fact, in the October, 1940 issue of "The Indian", the membership decided to hold several peace lectures: "…to avert another national catastrophe - - involvement in the present senseless European Holocaust…". Evidently, they maintained this view until the attack on Pearl Harbor, by which the great majority of the membership had in fact enlisted! The newsletters, folio, 4pp. are filled with reprinted letters from the front, promotions, demotions, and illnesses, as well as injuries sustained in battle. Ironically, there are is no mention of deaths in any issue. The early material documents the founding of the organization as well as its rapid and successful competitions in organized sports. Included are original 1932-1934 hand-typed, oversize folio newsletters created prior to a metal plate used in subsequent printing. Along with the 1968 itinerary for a reunion of the original membership, complete with the then last known addresses of the surviving constituency. Additional material consists of flyers, programs, pamphlets and other ephemera documenting the various private and social events promoted by the membership. This is just the tip of the iceberg of this remarkable archive which could be worked into a fabulous documentary or cinema project. Should be viewed, worthy of further research.
