Description:

('BAND OF BROTHERS' 506TH P.I.R.) LT. ROBERT E. HALEY 'MARKET GARDEN' JUMP BOOTS
ROBERT E. HALEY (1919-2004) American military officer in the 101st Airborne Division, a well-rounded student and athlete from Connecticut who served first with the 541st P.I.R., then more famously as 506 P.I.R. Headquarters platoon leader, company commander, and executive officer from late June, 1944 to August, 1945 during which he participated in the Operation Market Garden jump, Bastogne, and many other significant engagements of that famous regiment. He remained with the 506th until June, 1947. An important 506th PIR relic, Haley's pair of M43 combat boots which according to his son were worn by him during his jump with the 506th PIR on Sep. 17, 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. The brown suede leather boots, with their well-worn soles measuring 11.5 in. long, stand about 11 in. tall. Each boot has six eyelets on each side fitted with brown laces, above which are two tightening straps with buckles. The boots show plenty of honest wear, indicating they were used at length in the field. SOLD WITH: a war-date document signed by Haley as a member of the 506th, 1p. 4to., [n.p., August, 1944], his request that $100/month be withheld from his pay and sent to his mother in Hartford. Brittle, left margin chipped, still good to very good. Obtained directly from Haley's family who kept his lockers since his passing. With supporting documentation from Haley's records. The 101st mission was to secure the fifteen miles of Hell's Highway stretching from Eindhoven north to Veghel. The unit was to land in Holland on DZ B, seize the Wilhemina Canal bridges at Zon, then move south and take Eindhoven with its four highway bridges over the Dommel River. Shortly after 1315 hours on the afternoon of 17 September 1944, the entire regiment landed on one field, and the unit pushed south to Zon.
