Description:

('BAND OF BROTHERS' 506TH P.I.R.) LT. ROBERT E. HALEY'S M36 PARATROOPER BAG WITH SUSPENDERS
ROBERT E. HALEY (1919-2004) American military officer in the 101st Airborne Division, a well-rounded student and athlete from Connecticut who served first with the 541st P.I.R., then more famously as 506 P.I.R. Headquarters platoon leader, company commander, and executive officer from late June, 1944 to August, 1945 during which he participated in the Operation Market Garden jump, Bastogne, and many other significant engagements of that famous regiment. He remained with the 506th, transferred to Co. E in July, 1945, until June, 1947. An important pair of relics from Haley's footlocker, obtained directly from his family: his M36 Paratrooper Bag and M36 Suspenders, both of which would have been carried by him on his jump during Operation Market Garden, Sep. 17, 1944. The approx. 13 x 12 in. waterproof OD-green lined canvas paratrooper bag includes a 5 in. side pocket with button closure and a large, narrow rear compartment. The main compartment has two top-to-bottom compartments which are covered by a green flap secured with two adjustable straps. The bag is also fitted with a carrying strap with two snap clips. Included also is Haley's set of M36 adjustable suspenders with six snap clips which would support this bag, as well as Haley's web belt, pistol, ammo, extra magazines, etc. Both show some wear from use, in overall very good condition. SOLD WITH: an original war-date document signed by Haley, 1p. 4to., [Fort Benning?], ca. 1943, his attestation that he had settled all outstanding accounts at his post, signed signed by Haley while a member of the 541st PIR as well as by four of his officers. With supporting documentation from Haley's records. During Market Garden, the 101st's mission was to secure the fifteen miles of Hell's Highway stretching from Eindhoven north to Veghel. The unit was to land in Holland on DZ B, seize the Wilhelmina Canal bridges at Zon, then move south and take Eindhoven with its four highway bridges over the Dommel River. Shortly after 1315 hours on the afternoon of 17 September 1944, the entire regiment landed on one field, and the unit pushed south to Zon.
