Description:

('BAND OF BROTHERS' 506TH P.I.R.) LT. ROBERT E. HALEY M-3 FIGHTING KNIFE
ROBERT E. HALEY (1919-2004) American military officer in the 101st Airborne Division, a well-rounded student and athlete from Connecticut who served first with the 541st P.I.R., then more famously as 506 P.I.R. Headquarters platoon leader, company commander, and executive officer from late June, 1944 to August, 1945 during which he participated in the Operation Market Garden jump, Bastogne, and many other significant engagements of that famous regiment. He remained with the 506th, transferred to Co. E in July, 1945, until June, 1947. An excellent relic, Haley's M-3 fighting knife with scabbard, the knife reworked slightly by Haley to suit his personal preferences. The knife, 11 3/8 in. long overall, bears a leather grip with six grooves, leather spacers, and an unmarked Parkerized blade. The blade shows some running marks but is otherwise is in good condition. Haley modified the cross guard, bending-up the single downturned arm of the cross guard and filing down the ends of each. The scabbard is the standard M8 issue, with snap to the strap functioning. It shows wear commensurate with service in the field. A simple shoelace lanyard, used to tie the scabbard about the leg, is attached to the bottom of the scabbard. Overall very good. SOLD WITH: a war-date document signed by Haley, 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], his instructions on a form headed 'REPORT OF DEATH' indicating that he did not own a funeral plot, wished to be interred in Hartford, and named his mother to receive his death benefits. Some chips at left margin, else very good. Obtained directly from Haley's family who kept his lockers since his passing. With supporting documentation from Haley's records.
