Excerpts as follows: "..Camp near Fredericksburg. April 16th, 1862, had ordersto be ready with 8 days rations, our haversacks are full and we are bringing up the cavalry and flying artillery... saw some rebels in prison peeking through the grates... they are a hard lot of fellows though they had no uniform... Christmas of hardtack drowned in whiskey... lighting for negroes and politicians won't pay ....rebels attacked our lines and drove in our batteries. We got some prisoners.Clark and Wallace and four horses are dead...' The correspondence continues as Swanson is hospitalized and transferred to the Invalid Corps. An interesting collection.
