[ Autographs ] The Civil War Correspondence Of Robert Wilson A fine Union soldier's correspondence of twenty complete and two partial wardate letters from Pvt. Robert Wilson of the 34th Mass. The correspondence covers the period from 1862 to 1864, beginning with the campaign into West Virginia, but primarily concerns events in Northern Virginia and the preparation of defenses around Washington. In part: '...in the fort (Lyons) about an hour every forenoon drilling on the big guns... building 3 new forts close by here, but after the repulse at Fredericksburg we're afraid the Rebels were coming this way so we have been hurrying ever since to get them finished... the government has enough negroes in Washington and Alexandria to support... they should put them to work and save their soldiers... from what I have seen the government thinks more of a negro than a white man... will take about a month to finish the fortsand we will mount 10 guns each... the 34th is put into General Tyler's Brigade... he has charge of the artillery defenses of Washington... thought at one time that the war would have been over but I do not see any more sign of it now than it was a year ago. I think they will keep till the men are all killed off and then the women will have to settle it..." An interesting run of letters.
