[ Autographs ] The Civil War Correspondence Of Charles H. Allen A fine grouping of 19 wartime letters of Charles H. Allen, Co. G. 10th Rhode Island covering the period from 1862 to 1864 as the regiment was operating in the vicinity of Washington and in Northern Virginia, with mention of casualties from clashes with John S. Mosby's forces. Much excellent content, and are all transcribed by the previous owner. In small part: '...there is about 20,000 soldiers encamped within 2 miles of us besides 203 batteries of artillery and 5 or 6 forts... how is conscription law going to work? Is the men a going to show themselves men and light this thing out or not like babies afraid to get out of sight of their mothers I for one am going to see the end of this war or die in the attempt there has been a light near Warrenton and the rebels were defeated. Our wounded came down on the cars, and the blood was running out of the cars when they came in... one of our men taken prisoner and when he gave up his revolver to theRebs they shot him... 60 prisoners arrived here since the tight... they were Mosby cavalry. The Rhode Island cavalry is badly cut up... all rebel sympathisers must leave Alexandria in 36 hours or shoulder their muskets and go into the Union army... are under marching orders.. shall probably leave this week to go with Burnsides expedition... 'A fine grouping from a scarce state.
