Jesse Tuck writes a friend in Boston, in part: "....I have seen four Negroes hung by the neck since I have beenhere until they thought they were dead and then taken down and their heads taken off so I think they won't do any more mischief. Missouri is a fine place for negroes. They make the Negroes do all the work andthe white man plays, rides about and sports... their slave men even put on their shoes...there is a good auction today and I want to attend for there is some negro girls to be sold.
