[ Autographs ] NEGRO LYNCHING AND SLAVE AUCTION Good content A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., St. Louis, July 29, 1841, relating news of a lynching of slaves, and a slave auction. Jesse Tuck writes a friend in Boston, in part: "....I have seen four Negroes hung by the neck since I have beenhere until they thought they were dead and then taken down and their heads taken off so I think they won't do any more mischief. Missouri is a fine place for negroes. They make the Negroes do all the work andthe white man plays, rides about and sports... their slave men even put on their shoes...there is a good auction today and I want to attend for there is some negro girls to be sold. I think I shall buy me one if they do not go too high...". Slight uneven toning, otherwisevery good. E500-600 "My Country `Tis of Thee..."
